So, I met a hematologist....

Last week I met the hematologist, just as Dr. Detti said for me to do. The purpose of the visit was to discuss how the blood clotting factor could be helped during pregnancy through the use of anti-clotting shots. We were also supposed to discuss my overall health and any long-term concerns about the factor V issue. The hematologist said that he thinks that it would be good for me to take the shots when/if I get pregnant so that I could be better protected from clots, but that the shots wouldn't protect the placenta from clotting. I had trouble wrapping my head around this, since the placenta would be part of my body and therefore susceptible to clotting.

The next day we saw my dear Dr. Detti. I just love her!
She said that I could go ahead and begin Clomid. (To be sure it was a good time, they went ahead and did an ultrasound. Rather than having 7-12 follicles in each ovary, I had 28-32. Gracious!) I will follow the protocol that she'd planned for me back in October.... daily meds, Clomid for five days, aspirin after that, and an ultrasound and shot (hopefully). She said that she really believes that the shots will help the clotting issue and therefore increase a pregancy's chance of continuing. So, the addition to the current plan is that beginning tomorrow, I will also under the supervision of a Maternal/Fetal Medicine Specialist, aka high risk doctor. This doctor will work with Dr. Detti, my ob/gyn, and the hematologist to help plan and prescribe the right shots to keep a future pregnancy going. As of right now, the plan for when/if I get pregnant is thyroid med, folic acid tabs, prenatal vitamins, aspirin and shots daily until week thirty six. After that, the other meds will stay the same, but I'll get on a stronger blood thinning shot and increase the shots to three times per day.

Tomorrow I will meet the high risk doctor for the first time. I'll post how it goes. :)

Glad you got good news! I'll continue to keep you in my prayers.

(please let me know how you like the fetal/maternal doctor, b/c I'll need one if/when I get pregnant)
